A tropical low pressure system poses a risk of developing into a rare out-of-season cyclone in the Coral Sea, forecasters warn.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the low pressure system northeast of the Solomon Islands is moving west.

The forecaster says there is a 20 to 50 per cent chance it will form into a cyclone as it enters the Coral Sea on Tuesday.

"This out-of-season outlook is being issued due to the heightened risk of tropical cyclone development," the bureau said in a statement.

The forecaster said the system would remain very far offshore and did not pose a threat to Queensland's coast.

The official tropical cyclone season typically runs from November 1 to April 30, so the formation of a cyclone in early July would be unusual.
