Qld man pleads guilty to Collombet murder

Benjamin James Milward has pleaded guilty to the 2014 rape and murder of French exchange student Sophie Collombet.

Ms Collombet, then 21, had been walking home from university when she was attacked at Kurilpa Park, on the banks of the Brisbane River on March 27 2014.

Her naked and battered body was found in a rotunda at the park the following morning.

Milward, 26, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday morning to one count of rape and one count of murder.

Justice Ann Lyons adjourned the matter for a sentencing hearing on October 26.

Ms Collombet's brother was present on Wednesday and the court was told other members of her family will travel from France to be present for the sentencing later this month.

Milward is believed to have been high on a cocktail of alcohol and drugs when he attacked the 21-year-old.

During his committal hearing two witnesses said Milward had been "intoxicated" after injecting ice and drinking bourbon and wine at mutual acquaintance's flat on the morning of the attack.

The court also heard DNA matching Milward's was found in a sample from under Ms Collombet's fingernails.

Earlier in the day, he is said to have confided in a friend that the drug caused him problems.
