A case of meningococcal disease has been confirmed at a southeast Queensland primary school.

The West Morton Public Health Unit (WMPHU) says a member of the Augusta State School community has the illness.

"The chances of further cases related to this one are very low," the WMPHU said in a letter to the Ipswich school's staff and parents, which was sent on Thursday.

It said they were notified about the confirmed case on Wednesday afternoon.

The patient attended a medical appointment and was transferred to a Brisbane facility for treatment, the WMPHU said in a statement.

In June, a seven-year-old Brisbane boy was taken to hospital following a confirmed case of meningococcal disease.
