A Brisbane teenager has died in hospital after being allegedly struck once in the back of the head in a random attack.

Elite water polo player Cole Miller, 18, was the victim of an allegedly random assault in the Chinatown Mall early Sunday morning.

Mr Miller lost his fight for life in the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital on Monday, police confirmed.

Meanwhile, two young men have appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court over the attack.

Armstrong Renata and Daniel Jermaine Lee Maxwell, both aged 21, have each been charged with grievous bodily harm.

However, those charges are likely to be upgraded following Mr Miller's death.

Maxwell was refused bail, while Renata made no application for bail.

Mr Miller is the younger brother of Australian water polo player and Olympian Billy Miller.

He represented Queensland in under-20s water polo, and was a member of the Brisbane Barracudas Water Polo Club.
