'Try writing on a card': Deputy mayor's plea over 'I love you' graffiti all over Queensland town

A Queensland deputy mayor has pleaded with locals not to graffiti signs - or anything else - with public messages in an amusing Facebook post.

Deputy Mayor of Gladstone Regional Council Kahm Goodluck shared a photo of a sign for the Boyne River near Gladstone in Central Queensland, which had been adorned in pink graffiti saying "I love you Hannah."

Goodluck said it was one of more than 20 spots in the area that had been graffitied with the same words, including local businesses.

And he had some suggestions as to what the writer could have done instead, saying it was going to cost ratepayers and businesses money to clean it off.

"Please don't use public roads, road signs and car parks as your personal love letters," he said.

"You can try: writing "I love you Hannah" on a nice hand made card, buying some chocolates or a piece of jewellery, a surprise picnic in the park or anything else that only cost you time and money and will be much more appreciated I'm sure, rather than costing everyone else in the region time and money with council crews having to clean it up."

He said not only would council workers have to replace the signs, the extra jobs would take them away from cleaning up storm damage, after wild weather over the past few weeks.
