Maryborough independent remains hopeful

By his own admission he is a slim chance, but independent candidate Chris Foley may still regain his seat of Maryborough and add to the uncertainty surrounding Queensland's parliament.

Mr Foley, who held the seat from 2003 until he was beaten by LNP candidate Anne Maddern in 2012, is trailing Ms Maddern and Labor's Bruce Saunders, with 85 per cent of the vote counted.

But he has not given up winning on preferences. At present, Mr Foley has 21.6 per cent of the primary vote, the LNP 30.4 per cent and Labor 25.5 per cent.

"Even though there's a thousand-odd vote gap between myself and Labor, once those preferences are distributed ... the preference flow seems to be favouring me," Mr Foley told AAP.

If Mr Foley wins the seat, it would further complicate the make-up of Queensland's next government.

The major parties have been negotiating with independent Peter Wellington and the two Katter party MPs, Rob Katter and Shane Knuth, to try to form a minority government.

Mr Foley has spoken to Mr Katter and Mr Knuth and will try to speak to Mr Wellington in the next couple of days.

He said regardless of how the preferences fell, he could see only two possible winners for Maryborough - Mr Saunders or himself.

"Looking at the possible scenarios, if I close the gap on preferences and get in just ahead of Labor, then I get their preferences and that would push me over the line and vice versa," he said.

"Either way, I think the previous member, it would be impossible for her to win.

"That's the danger of running a just vote one campaign scenario."
