A man is in a serious condition in hospital after being repeatedly stabbed in a fight at a Gold Coast tavern.

Two men not known to one another became involved in a physical altercation at the licensed premises in Tugun about 6.30pm on Thursday, police say.

They allege a 30-year-old produced a knife during the dispute and stabbed his 21-year-old victim multiple times in the chest and abdomen before fleeing.

The injured man, a local, was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

Around 8.30pm, the other man, also from Tugun, surrendered to police.

He has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on December 3.
