Brisbane man sentenced to community service after abusing dachshund

A Brisbane man who was filmed abusing a small dog has been sentenced to community service and banned from owning an animal for three years.

Trent Matthew Hassum, 30, was captured on camera in May pulling dachshund Aubree by the collar from her enclosure.

Hassum then pushed Aubree's head into the ground and lay on it, and then held her up in the air by her collar.

The dog yelped throughout the ordeal.

Hassum today pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in Sandgate Magistrates Court, after the RSPCA received footage of the incident.

The dog is now living in a new home.

Hassum was sentenced to 150 hours of community service and banned from owning an animal for three years.

RSPCA Queensland spokesman Michael Beatty said the community service order showed the magistrate took the deliberate act of cruelty seriously.
