A man was working on a train line when he fell down a trench. (9NEWS) 

A man has been rescued from a building site at Mango Hill, north of Brisbane, after falling down a trench.

The 55-year-old had been working on a train line when he fell and became trapped just before 7.30am.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said it appeared a bundle of steel had dropped on the man.

He was taken from the scene via stretcher after reporting back pain.

Paramedics took the man to Royal Brisbane Hospital in a stable condition.
