Man charged over abduction near Qld pub

A man has been charged with trying to abduct a woman outside a central Queensland pub.

The 21-year-old man asked the woman for directions as she was standing outside a hotel in North Rockhampton on Monday about 12.15am.

He then allegedly put her in a headlock and dragged her towards a nearby ute.

The woman struggled and alerted nearby residents who came to help.

The man released the woman, who was unhurt, and fled the scene.

Police say they pursued the ute on the Bruce Highway and around the Rockhampton area for about 40 minutes before the man fled on foot into long grass.

The dog squad quickly tracked him down and police took the man, who was bitten on the leg, to the Rockhampton Hospital for treatment.

He has been charged with a string of offences including assault occasioning bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evading police, deprivation of liberty, driving without a licence and assault obstruct police.

The man will appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon.
