A man who suffered head injuries after an apparent one-punch attack on the Gold Coast has told police he doesn't want them to pursue the matter.

The 24-year-old man was taken to hospital in a critical condition following the fight near a Southport takeaway store about 7pm on Thursday night.

The man's condition was upgraded on Friday with doctors saying his injuries weren't life-threatening.

After being brought out of an induced coma, the man told police he did not want to make a complaint and the matter has been finalised.

Despite the outcome, Detective Senior Sergeant Troy Penrose said the incident could easily have ended in tragedy.

"Any punch to the head, or any act of violence to the head is serious," he said.

"We continually make the point that one punch can kill, or at the very least cause serious injury and effectively can be life-changing for all involved."
