A Queensland teenager will remain behind bars as the man he allegedly punched in the back of the head fights for life in hospital.

Ariik Mayot, 19, has been remanded in custody after facing the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday over a one-punch attack.

Police allege Mayot was walking along a street at Goodna, in Ipswich, on Monday afternoon when he turned and punched a 56-year-old man in the back of the head.

The older man fell and hit his head on the pavement.

He remains in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

Mayot has been charged with grievous bodily harm, however the charge may be upgraded if his alleged victim doesn't survive.

He'll next face court on June 30.
