A teenager accused of bashing a stranger outside a Gold Coast pub is expected to face upgraded charges after the victim died in hospital.

The 40-year-old was left fighting for his life after the attack outside the Coolangatta Hotel on December 4.

Police will allege the teen was involved in a fight with a group of people before moving away and striking the older man, causing him to fall on the road.

Bystanders had to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim after his heart stopped. He also sustained fractures to his face and jaw.

The man died in hospital on Monday afternoon.

An 18-year-old New Zealand national was originally charged with grievous bodily harm.

It's expected that will be upgraded to unlawful striking causing death when he appears in the Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.
