Man comes down from Gold Coast crane after hours-long standoff

A man who climbed a crane on a building site on the Gold Coast finally came down after hours of negotiations, including lures like a bottle of water.
The man came to police attention when he scaled the machine in Miami just after 6am.

Police said a small section of the Esplanade was closed off, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
Traffic was redirected.
It’s not yet known why the man, who appeared to be clad in his underwear and carrying a bedsheet, chose to climb the crane.
At one point, he demanded to speak to a lawyer.
A police negotiator atop a neighbouring apartment block spoke to the man, and was able to coax him down several levels with a bottle of water.
Firefighters then used their extended aerials to reach him.
Once at the base of the crane, a further hour of negotiations was needed before the man agreed to come out.
He was taken to an ambulance under police guard.
The crane is part of a construction site, but all work there was halted as the incident unfolded.
