Man charged over Qld gas bottle explosion

A north Queensland man has faced court after allegedly causing a gas bottle explosion that left him and his mother in hospital on Australia Day.

The explosion tore apart a home in Kewarra Beach in Cairns and left the 39-year-old man and his 65-year-old mother hospitalised with serious burns.

She was taken to Cairns Hospital, while he was airlifted to Brisbane in a critical condition for treatment and placed under police guard before being charged.

He was charged with wilful damage and acts intended to disfigure and was remanded in custody to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on March 14.
