Man charged over Gold Coast highway fracas

A man has been charged over a fracas on the Gold Coast which landed a police officer in hospital and injured several motorists.

The 44-year-old man is accused of driving a ute at high speeds on the Pacific Motorway at Robina on January 11.

Police allege he crashed into two cars at a roadworks site before hitting a barrier and coming to a stop.

He then allegedly fled the ute and tried to push a woman off her motorbike that had stopped.

The man then allegedly assaulted a 47-year-old female senior constable while she tried to arrest him.

Four members of the public came to her aid and held the man down until more police arrived and took him into custody.

The man will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday charged with dangerous operation or a motor vehicle and serious assault.
