A Brisbane man charged with assault after an onboard incident forced a flight to be diverted has been remanded in custody.

Stephen Boyd Jones, 45, was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly verbally abused other passengers and crew on the flight headed from Brisbane to Darwin.

The plane was diverted to Townsville and the man was escorted off the plane.

On Wednesday, Jones's case was mentioned in the Townsville Magistrates Court, where he was remanded in custody, a court official said.

No bail application was recorded and his case was adjourned until next week.

Jones is charged with offensive and disorderly behaviour, having prohibited items on board an aircraft, assaulting crew, carrying prohibited items through a screening point, certain offences committed on an aircraft, and common assault.
