A woman returning to her car after it ran out of fuel has been struck and killed as she tried to cross the Bruce Highway north of Brisbane.

The woman and a man had caught a taxi to get more fuel at Caboolture and were returning to their vehicle about 4am on Monday when she was struck, police said.

"We urge people not to cross the Bruce Highway ... it's a dangerous place to cross," Sgt Greg Price told ABC radio.

It's alleged the man got into a car at the White Rock address near Cairns early on New Year's Day and struck the woman as he drove away.

The 64-year-old sustained critical injuries and died a short time later at Cairns Base Hospital.

The 27-year-old Manoora man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and unlicensed driving and is to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Monday.
