Man charged over Brisbane hostel assault

A 29-year-old man has been charged over the sexual assault of a backpacker at a Brisbane hostel.

The south Brisbane resident has been charged with assault with intent to commit rape and enter premises with intent to commit an indictable offence and will face Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

Police allege the man entered a backpackers hostel on Upper Roma Street about 5.30am on January 18 and inappropriately touched a woman asleep in a bed.

The man is then alleged to have left after being ordered out by the woman, but loitered in the area for several hours before visiting another nearby backpackers.

Police released video footage and images of the man on Saturday and say a member of the public contacted them with information within hours of their release.
