Man charged after Cairns stand-off

A man who allegedly threatened police with a knife during a stand-off in a Cairns beach suburb has surrendered and faces assault charges.

Officers were called to a Trinity Park home at around 3.15pm (AEST) on Saturday following reports of a man making threats.

"Police entered the home only to be confronted and threatened by a man armed with a knife," police said in a statement.

"Officers withdrew from the house and police negotiators were called and police cordons were established."

The 24-year-old man surrendered to police at around 7.25pm and was taken to Cairns Base Hospital for treatment to minor injuries he sustained while in the house.

He was charged with two counts of serious assault police whilst armed with an offensive instrument.

The man remains in police custody and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Monday.
