Qld man avoids jail over fireworks scare

A man whose stash of home-made fireworks sparked the evacuation of a Brisbane motel has been ordered to undertake community service.

Members of the Australian Defence Force were called to the Windsor International Motel on July 4, 2014 after it was feared explosives found in a guest's room were grenades.

Corey John Irwin, 33, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday to possessing explosive fireworks without authority, as well as drugs and property offences.

The court heard motel staff alerted police when they noticed a number of people entering the room.

The building was evacuated when officers found several "aerial shell" fireworks with electric detonators in a brown bag.

Police also uncovered an apparent drug operation involving several people, resulting in Irwin being charged with several offences including cannabis possession and production.

His former partner is facing supply charges.

Irwin's lawyer Samit Seth said the fireworks belonged to a previous tenant and Irwin had intended to hand them to police.

However Sgt Longhurst said he had caused significant inconvenience to police, the army and motel residents.

"He was in a confined motel ... one would imagine, if they went off, it's not like lighting a sparkler," police prosecutor Sergeant Martin Longhurst said.

"It certainly could have done some damage to that motel room."

Magistrate Paul Kluck sentenced Irwin, a repeat drug offender, to 120 hours community service with the conditions that he consent to supervision by a probation officer and not reoffend.
