A man has been charged with a hit-and-run that left a young Gold Coast father lying in the middle of a road with critical head injuries.

Andrew Mavridis, 27, was found unconscious on Tallai Road in the Gold Coast hinterland on May 3, wearing only boxer shorts.

He was placed in an induced coma and has only been able to open his eyes in the weeks since, according to media reports.

A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged on Wednesday morning with three offences including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

Police initially launched an appeal to find a late model white 4WD wagon but have been unable to confirm if the man charged was driving that car.

He will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Mr Mavridis, who has a two-year-old son, had recovered from a head injury six years ago.
