A man has been charged with the murder of his wife after allegedly shooting her in southeast Queensland and calling emergency services.

Police allege 72-year-old father-of-three Richard Kelsey shot his 67-year-old wife Gail at Chambers Flat in Logan before 9pm on Friday.

He then called emergency services for assistance.

Officers went to the Alexander Court home and took the man into custody with the help of the police helicopter.

"He was distraught at the time when police arrived," Tohy Lohmann from Queensland Police said.

Emergency workers tried to save the woman but could not.

The pair had been married for three decades.
