Suspended Logan mayor Luke Smith has been charged with assault after a disturbance at a home south of Brisbane.

Police took Smith, 48, into custody after attending the home in Meadowbrook around 8am on Friday.

It's believed the home is that of a family member of the Logan City Council mayor.

Hours later Smith was charged with assault, obstruct police and wilful damage and taken to the Beenleigh Watchhouse.

Smith is expected to remain behind bars for the entire weekend before appearing at the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday.

Earlier this year Smith was charged with corruption and perjury by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

Those charges led to Smith being suspended from his mayoralty in May but he has vowed to defend the charges.

The CCC say Friday's charges are unrelated to their investigations into corruption allegations against Logan City Council.

Smith is one of several southeast Queensland mayors to be charged by the CCC including former Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale, sacked Fraser Coast Regional Council mayor Chris Loft and current Ipswich mayor Andrew Antoniolli.
