Gordon's vote passes LNP surgery motion

The Liberal National Party has scored a superficial victory over Queensland's government with the help of controversial MP Billy Gordon.

The Member for Cook's vote helped pass the opposition motion to reinstate a guarantee on elective surgery waiting times.

The LNP also relied upon support from two Katter's Australian Party MPs to get its motion over the line in state parliament on Tuesday night.

Mr Gordon, who's vote the LNP says is "tainted", has real concerns about surgery waiting times in his far north Queensland electorate.

"I am operating as an independent in this parliament ... I have to vote with my conscience and tonight I did that and that is how I intend to vote throughout this parliament," he told reporters after the vote.

"I voted with the opposition because I think there are still some fundamental issues out there."

LNP leader Lawrence Springborg didn't mention that Mr Gordon, who he's been calling to resign from parliament, was crucial in passing his party's motion.

Instead Mr Springborg called the result a win for the state.

"Labor did not have a mandate to abolish Australia's first surgery wait time guarantee and tonight the parliament voted to protect it," the opposition leader said in a statement.

The motion isn't binding and the government isn't obligated to act, so it's only a superficial win for the LNP.

Mr Gordon made headlines earlier in the day when Speaker Peter Wellington banned the opposition from referring to the "Palaszczuk-Gordon government".

The LNP has done so continually since Mr Gordon last month voted with Labor against an attempt to change standing orders so the opposition could try to nullify his vote.

Mr Gordon was ousted from Labor in March over allegations of domestic abuse, unpaid child support and tax avoidance and his failure to declare undisclosed criminal convictions to the party.

Police are investigating the domestic violence allegations.
