Queensland's Liberal National Party has pledged to introduce an $18 million program to provide free swimming lessons for up to 120,000 of the state's young children if victorious at the upcoming state poll.

Opposition leader Tim Nicholls said the program would provide $150 vouchers - estimated to cover up to 10 lessons - for parents who enrolled their kids aged one to four in classes at an accredited club.

"Tragically, child drownings are still occurring in our backyard swimming pools, local waterways and dams. More needs to be done to help our youngest Queenslanders with water safety and education and to help parents with the cost of swimming lessons," he said on Saturday.
