LNP cop reportedly vetted Qld candidates

An LNP member and police officer has been accused of conducting background checks on potential candidates before the last Queensland election.

Fairfax Media reports an internal police investigation found Llew O'Brien inappropriately accessed police information about potential candidates in the seat of Nanango in the lead-up to the 2012 state election.

The police investigation was launched after legally-suppressed information about Gympie LNP MP David Gibson, who has since retired, was publicly released during the 2012 preselection battle.

Fairfax Media reports that police said Mr O'Brien faced "managerial action" over his actions, and he has resigned from the LNP state executive.

It's understood he is still an active LNP member.

A spokesman for the LNP executive told Fairfax Media the party "was unaware that police had taken managerial action" against Mr O'Brien.
