Landslip opens hole at Qld camping site

A large section of beach has fallen into the sea at a popular Queensland camping location for the second time in six months.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) rangers are monitoring erosion near a barge landing at Inskip Point, north of the Sunshine Coast.

It's believed a phenomenon known as a "near-shore landslide" undermined the shoreline and caused the rapid erosion between 8am and 10.15am on Tuesday.

"When this occurs below the waterline, the shoreline loses support and a section slides seaward leaving a hole, the edges of which retrogress back towards the shore," the QPWS said in a statement.

No people were near the affected area at the time and campsites on the point were unaffected.

A similar situation in September 2015 resulted in a 200m section of shoreline falling into the sea.

Several vehicles and tents were lost or damaged in that event, though no people were harmed.

Traffic barriers and warning signs have been erected and QPWS is asking people to observe all warnings in the area.

A barge that operates between the point and nearby Fraser Island is also unaffected by the event.
