Koala advocate urges action by Qld premier

The Australian Koala Foundation has called on Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to stop the state's terrible record of koala protection.

Foundation chief executive Deborah Tabart has attacked the state's former premiers and sent a letter to Ms Palaszczuk demanding a moratorium on land clearing of all known koala habitats in the state.

Ms Tabart says she's "disgusted" with politicians from both major parties for their refusal to act and protect Queensland's dwindling koala population over the past 25 years.

She said former premier Campbell Newman had an "appalling" land clearing policy.

But Ms Tabart also placed the blame on former Labor premiers Wayne Goss, Peter Beattie and Anna Bligh.

Her criticism comes following a University of Queensland report, released in August 2015, which found koala populations in and around Brisbane had decreased by as much as 80 per cent.
