Knife-wielding man shot by police charged

A man who was shot repeatedly as he rushed at police on the Gold Coast has been charged over the incident.

Officers went to the address at Molendinar late on Monday after being told a man armed with two knives was causing a disturbance.

Police ordered him to drop the knives but he refused.

"They made repeated requests for the male person to drop those knives, at which point the male charged at police," Superintendent Mark White said.

"As a result, the police officers who were attending discharged their firearm a number of times and the male person sustained injuries."

He was shot a number of times in the torso.

The man survived and his condition is stable after surgery at the Gold Coast University Hospital on Tuesday.

He was charged with intending grievous bodily harm, two counts of serious assault on police while armed and possession of a knife in public.

His mother Wendy Watkins told reporters on Tuesday she did not know he was armed when he left home before the shooting.

"I didn't see him take the knives but when he went down the hall, I saw him with his hand on his side and saw something there and I thought it was his mobile phone," she said.

"But he went to go outside and he made a point of saying, stay inside. But he hadn't spoken to anybody so I knew he wasn't going out there to harm anybody."

His matter is expected to be heard in the Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The police Ethical Standards Command is investigating the police shooting.

Support is being offered to the officers involved in the shooting, and they are being encouraged to seek counselling.
