Homage paid to Qld activist Sam Watson

Indigenous leader Sam Watson spent decades fighting for his community but on Friday they will pay homage to his activism before laying him to rest.

Mr Watson, a Wangerriburra and Birri Gubba man, passed away in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital surrounded by his loved ones last week.

At 67, he left behind a legacy of activism spanning decades.

His involvement in politics and his fight for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians began at the age of 16, handing out how-to-vote cards for the Yes campaign in the 1967 referendum.

Mr Watson's daughter Nicole described her father as a cherished husband, brother, uncle and grandfather, who was proud of his indigenous heritage.

A service will be held for him at Brisbane's Musgrave Park on Friday from 11am to 12.30pm.
