Dementia patient found after spending lonely night outside retirement home

An elderly woman has spent a lonely night alone after going missing from her high-care retirement home.

Julia Wood, 74, suffers from Dementia and went missing from her care home at Point Vernon in Hervey Bay around 4pm yesterday.

An enormous search effort was launched, including aerial support from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter combing local waterways.

The woman was found just before lunch today, and taken to hospital for assessment. 9News

Locals spent all night on foot searching bushland and roadways for any sign of the 74-year-old.

"Pretty much everyone we spoke to along the foreshore and along the esplanade were all aware of it and were out there on their own free will having a look for her," said Lindsay Judson from Queensland Police.

After a long night Ms Wood was located safe and well just before lunch today.

Helicopters combed the air for any clue as to the 74-year-old's whereabouts. 9News

"She appears to be suffering from the effects of dehydration but that's all," said Mr Judson.
