Help needed for north Qld flood victims

At least three families lost everything after their homes were inundated during the worst flooding in almost 50 years to hit a north Queensland town.

And at least another 15 homes and numerous businesses were damaged in Malanda, inland from Cairns, when torrential rain hit the state's north earlier this month.

A single mother who has six children aged under 14 is among those whose homes were totally flooded.

Community groups are calling on people to donate any quality household goods as well as clothing and food vouchers to those families who are having to start over.

"There are at least three families that have lost everything that I know of but I think there are probably more," Tanya Cooper from the Eacham Community Help Organisation said.

Ms Cooper said those affected were coping well but urgently needed help.

"Malanda has pulled together to help these people ... but basically they need anything for the house that is in good condition," she said.

About 500mm of rain was recorded near Malanda between February 6 and 8, and other areas received up to 700mm.

Rivers and creeks surrounding Malanda rose quickly, flooding parts of the town, wiping out sections of roads and bridges.

The local mayor, Rosa Lee Long, has said it was the worst flooding to hit the town since 1967 and the damage bill will likely run into the millions.
