A major accident on Queensland's premier motorway is causing traffic chaos for travellers at the start of the state's school holidays.

Southbound lanes of the Pacific Motorway, connecting Brisbane and Gold Coast, have been closed at Gaven after a multiple-vehicle crash late Friday afternoon.

The accident on the M1 comes at the worst possible time for congestion and after the state's peak motoring body suggested holiday makers delay their trips to the weekend.

"We have the usual hotspots - the Pacific Motorway on the Gold Coast, the Gateway Motorway in Brisbane and the Bruce Highway on the Sunshine Coast - which are once again expected to be among the most congested areas," the RACQ's Renee Smith said.

"If possible, motorists should consider delaying their trip until (Saturday) morning."
