Greens Queensland result outstanding: Di Natale

Federal Greens leader Richard Di Natale says the party's "outstanding" result in the Queensland election is further evidence politics in Australia has changed forever.

"The message from voters is loud and clear. They are sick and tired of the old parties," he told ABC television on Sunday.

Senator Di Natale says Australians are voting for minor parties and are willing to accept power-sharing governments.

"They will be the rule rather than the exception at state parliaments, in federal government; that's the direction we're heading and I think we should embrace it."

Late on Saturday night, neither Labor nor the opposition Liberal National Party had enough seats to be able to form majority government in Queensland.

The party has a chance of getting its first MP into the state parliament and gave Deputy Premier Jackie Trad a major scare in her seat of South Brisbane.

Senator Di Natale says he expects Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to negotiate with the Greens if she needs them to form government, despite her election pledge not to deal with the minor parties.

"Once the electorate speaks, all that they've said before will be for nothing and what we will see is negotiations with Greens and independents if the voters have delivered a power-sharing arrangement."

He says the controversial Adani mine had been a major factor in the election outcome.
