Gold Coast cruise terminal flaws revealed

Cruise ships using a $450 million terminal on the Gold Coast could be pushed to shore by strong winds and large waves, an official report has shown.

A feasibility study into the proposed terminal, which would be located at The Spit, was released earlier this year with 56 pages redacted.

However, the missing pages reveal cruise ship operators have concerns its location in open ocean could expose vessels to large waves that could push them to shore, the ABC's Four Corners reports.

Mayor Tom Tate has previously thrown his weight behind the proposal, but Gold Coast councillor Peter Young says it's a waste of money.

"It's just an unviable, incredibly expensive exercise," he told the ABC on Tuesday.

The proposed terminal could cater for up to 150 cruise ships visiting the Gold Coast each year.
