Jewel workers injured: Three taken to hospital from Broadbeach site

Three workers are lucky to be alive after a steel pipe weighing more than three tonnes fell from a wall, trapping one.

The men were working in the lower carpark area of the $1 billiob Jewel high-rise development at Surfers Paradise this morning when the steel pipe containing electrical cables fell from a height of three metres.

A 27-year-old man was trapped for a short time before his co-workers freed him.

He was taken to hospital with a fractured pelvis.

Two 28-year-old men were also taken to hospital in a stable condition with leg, shoulder and neck injuries.

9News understands the three men were electricians.

Queensland Ambulance Service Senior Operations Supervisor Gavin Fuller said the men were lucky to be alive, as the pipe weighed around 3.6 tonnes.

"They were very lucky when you get down there and have a look at the confined space they were in and you actually see the piece of gear that's fallen from the wall onto them."

Workers were ordered off-site and Workplace Health and Safety were at the site throughout the day.
