Qld beaches reopen after mighty swells

All beaches on the southern Queensland coast have reopened after days of closures due to huge waves and strong rips generated by ex-tropical cyclone Winston.

Beaches on the Gold Coast reopened on Monday morning after three consecutive days of closures.

Gold Coast acting chief lifeguard Chris Maynard said conditions had dramatically changed since the weekend, meaning it was now safe for swimmers to go back into the water.

"We have woken to a swell of a metre and a half, which is back to normal," he told AAP on Monday.

"There are still some strong currents about but all flagged areas are open."

All beaches on the Gold Coast had been closed since Friday, with the exception of a few that opened late on Sunday.

All Sunshine Coast beaches are also open on Monday, although conditions will be monitored throughout the day.

Waves as high as six metres pounded the coast on Saturday as the Bureau of Meteorology issued severe weather and wind warnings.

The rough conditions also prompted the closure of most beaches on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

However, conditions began to ease on Sunday.
