A Gold Coast man accused of a brutal assault has been denied bail after a court heard his alleged victim is unlikely to survive his injuries.

Nathan Sanchez, 23, faced Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with assaulting a 27-year-old man in a neighbourhood dispute on Tuesday evening.

During his bail application the magistrate was told by police prosecutors Sanchez's charges were likely to be upgraded from grievous bodily harm with the victim currently in hospital in a critical condition with serious head injuries.

Media reports suggest the man had no pulse when police arrived at the scene of the fight on Tuesday.

Police resuscitated the man at the scene but it's reported he's on a ventilator in the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Sanchez has been remanded in custody and will return to court on September 19.
