Premier to consider cruise ship terminal

Plans to built a cruise ship terminal on the Gold Coast are a step closer to becoming a reality after Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she would consider the proposal.

A day after Gold Coast's council voted 14-to-one in favour of the plan to build a terminal at The Spit, including a jetty up to 800 metres long, Ms Palaszczuk said she was open to the prospect of having two terminals in southeast Queensland.

"If the mayor submits a business case and puts forward a proposal to the Queensland government I'm happy to have a look at it," the premier said.

Ms Palaszczuk had previously told the ABC she did not feel the need for a terminal on the Gold Coast if one was also built at Brisbane's Luggage Point as planned.

She had also previously highlighted environmental concerns - the details of which are likely to be discovered when an $865,000 feasibility and environmental impact study into the site is completed in February.

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate welcomed Ms Palaszczuk's comments on Wednesday, saying he would write to her before attempting to meet with her to present the plans.

"I think that now she knows we have narrowed it down to the one side of Phillip Park, I think it has crystallised people's thinking," Cr Tate said.

"Now, she can see where we want to go is probably the best fit.

Cr Tate also maintained his stance that two terminals could operate side-by-side in the area.

The comments come after Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls on Tuesday urged Ms Palaszczuk to consider the Gold Coast's proposal.
