When those children weren't collected, the alarm was raised.
The girl’s father drove local roads before coming across the wreckage, the car found submerged and upside down in a dam on a property.
A farmer who lives there tried to pull them out.
Emergency services did all they could, but the 10-year-old girl and her 36-year-old step-mother died at the scene.
At a press conference on Friday, Maryborough Patrol Group Inspector Paul Algie said his region has seen 26 preventable deaths on roads this year, and he’s had enough.
Inspector Paul Algie lamented another road death, saying “it’s like I’m the grim reaper of Maryborough”. 9News
"At a personal level, as the patrol inspector for Maryborough, I'm getting sick of talking about this to media, it's like I'm the grim reaper of Maryborough, and I'm fed up with it," he said.
Police said early indications were that inattention and speed were possible factors to the crash.
