Queensland footballers charged over Australia Day rape

Two aspiring Australian Rules footballers were among a group who allegedly sexually assaulted another man with a glass bottle and posted video of the incident online.

A Brisbane magistrate refused to allow the young teammates to have contact with each other on Friday despite one's lawyer arguing the incident was a "youthful prank".

"They're footballers," defence lawyer Eugene Sullivan told the court.

"It's not as though they're concocting a story.

"Their defence is it was a youthful prank ... we don't need to talk up a defence here."

Their solicitors argued they could not avoid contact with one another when they trained in the same squad.

The Brisbane Magistrates Court heard the victim was allegedly assaulted with a glass bottle while passed out on Australia Day this year.

He only found out about the alleged assault when he saw video of it posted to social media.

A decision about the group's bail conditions has not yet been decided.

In all, four young men have been charged, with three expected in court on Monday.
