Flash flooding likely in southeast Qld

Southeast Queensland is being warned to brace for a weekend of wet weather, with heavy rain and a king tide likely to cause some flash flooding.

Showers are forecast from Fraser Island to the NSW border over the coming days but the worst weather is expected to hit on Saturday.

Falls of 20mm to 80mm are likely near the coast, including Brisbane.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Lauren Pattie told AAP isolated storms bringing up to 150mm of rain were possible.

"It's looming as a fairly significant weather event ... with that you can expect possible flash flooding," she said.

Gale-force winds and a king tide are expected to hit the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The rain is being caused by a low on the Great Australian Bight which will travel northeast towards Queensland.

The trough is not likely to bring substantial rain to drought-stricken western Queensland before dumping heavier falls closer to the coast.
