Qld Firebirds honoured for premiership win

Hundreds of netball fans have turned out for a ticker-tape parade in Brisbane to honour the Queensland Firebirds after their stunning grand final win.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk congratulated the women but admitted he thought they were gone in the final minutes of Sunday's trans-Tasman netball grand final against the NSW Swifts.

"I have to be frank and say I thought it was a bridge too far - four goals down against a side like NSW with just two minutes to go," he said.

The team secured Queensland's first title since 2011 after taking the lead for the first time with just 15 seconds left on the clock.

Captain Laura Geitz said the parade had capped off an incredible week of celebrations.
