Final Qld meeting ahead of dump decision

A tiny Queensland town opposed to becoming the home of a nuclear waste dump will hold a final public meeting before the government's consultation period closes.

Oman Ama, southwest of Toowoomba, was in November named as one of six potential sites for the low-level waste facilities, along with Cortlinye, Pinkawillinie, and Barndioota in South Australia, Hale in the Northern Territory and Sallys Flat in NSW.

It was chosen because one landowner was interested in an offer to be bought out.

Throughout the subsequent four-month consultation period, lobby group Friends of Oman Ama have demanded the Turnbull government take the town off the list.

The government will choose two to three locations after the consultation period ends on Friday.

On Thursday afternoon, residents and community figures will gather for a public meeting at Inglewood, just west of the town, along with Australian Greens deputy leader Senator Scott Ludlam and Queensland Senator Larissa Waters.

"A waste dump in southern Queensland, in an agricultural area at the headwaters of the Murray-Darling Basin, presents obvious and serious health and environmental risks," Ms Waters said.

Senator Ludlam accused the government of attempting to downplay community concerns.

Friends of Oman Ama representatives travelled to Canberra last week to meet with advisors of Resources Minister Josh Frydenberg, who has so far described the consultation period as "constructive".

He pledged to take into account a range of views from within the community in making a final decision.

"This includes those from residents, stakeholders and local organisations," Mr Frydenberg said.

"Ultimately we are looking for a site which has broad-based community support."

The lobby group insists it is not political nor anti-nuclear, arguing there is no safety, security or industrial urgency issue to mandate the building of the dumps.

Its members are concerned about the impact on property prices and say the government hasn't clearly outlined how it will measure "community support" before proceeding.
