A Fijian tourist has been stabbed in the face during a late night attack at a north Queensland entertainment precinct.

Police say a fight broke out between a local man, 32, and the 35-year-old Fijian man outside a takeaway store on Shute Harbour Road in Airlie Beach - a busy nightclub strip popular among backpackers - just after 2am on Sunday.

The local man, from nearby Cannonvale, then allegedly grabbed a knife from the shop and stabbed the Fijian man in the face.

"As a result the victim was treated by paramedics at the scene for a significant laceration to the face and taken to Proserpine Hospital," police said in a statement.

The Australian has been charged with three offences, including unlawful wounding, and has been remanded in custody to appear in Proserpine Magistrates Court on Monday.
