Eight people have been injured in a fiery multi-vehicle crash which is causing traffic chaos on one of Queensland's busiest highways.

Queensland police say a car caught fire after colliding with a truck on the M1 at Coomera, on the Gold Coast, about 9.20am (AEST) on Tuesday.

Three other cars were also damaged in the crash.

Eight people have been taken to Gold Coast and Robina hospitals, including a woman who is in a serious but stable condition after suffering lower leg and chest injuries.

Six others, three men and three women, are being treated for minor injuries, including one who suffered burns.

A baby was taken to hospital for observation.

The northbound M1 was closed for about two hours but one lane has since reopened although motorists should expect delays for some time, police say.

Earlier on Tuesday the traffic backlog was reportedly six kilometres long.
