Police hold grave fears for a teenage boy who vanished after jumping off a cliff into a water-filled quarry west of Brisbane.

The 16-year-old was playing with friends when he dived into the quarry at a private property at Collingwood Park near Ipswich about midday on Monday.

Ipswich district duty officer Sergeant Paul Andrews said teenagers who were with the boy saw him briefly resurface before going under the water.

"We certainly do fear the worst," he told AAP.

Sgt Andrews said the boy's parents were being comforted by a chaplain at the quarry where swift-water rescue crews and police divers continue to search Monday night.
