Seventh ex-bikie on trial for extortion

A former Bandidos bikie who was allegedly part of an extortion ring has become the seventh ex-gang member committed to trial in Brisbane.

Emmanuel Janouris has been ordered to front the District Court over allegations he punched a man in the face and demanded $5000.

Six other former Bandidos have been committed to trial on extortion and other charges in the past month.

Janouris is alleged to have punched victim Rhys Brennan in the face in the car park of a Brisbane hotel in May 2013.

He allegedly told Mr Brennan he had two weeks to pay $5000 or he would die.

Alongside Janouris in the car park was Anthony Toumpas, the ex-president of the Bandidos' West End chapter, the court heard.

It is claimed Mr Brennan transferred money into Toumpas's account after the assault.

Brisbane Magistrate Anne Thacker ruled on Thursday there was sufficient evidence to commit Janouris to trial on two charges of extortion and one of assault occasioning bodily harm in company.

Toumpas was committed to trial over the incident and others on Wednesday.

Also facing trial over other alleged extortions are fellow ex-Bandidos Brett Pechey, Joshua Vosuqa, Milan Kalanj, George Bejat and Zivko Stojakovic.

All were ordered to face a jury despite several alleged victims of the extortion ring retracting their statements in court.

Ms Thacker ruled a jury should decide the strength of the evidence.
