Elderly Queensland driver critical after attack

An elderly man has been critically injured after he was viciously attacked while driving in central Queensland.

The 72-year-old was driving in Mackay around 4am today when another man threw an object at his four-wheel drive, shattering the windscreen.

The driver suffered facial injuries from the shattered glass. He was then bashed by the assailant once his car had stopped.

He was taken to the Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition.

Police have appealed for public information and are yet to locate the offender.
